10 Wholesome Ways A Christian May Spend Leisure Time

Hello Chosen,

Glad to see you sticking with me. And if you’re new, welcome! I haven’t been keeping in touch with you as often as I'd like but hey, that’s life, it gets hectic sometimes. Going forward, I will try to write to you at least once per month. And along that line, I couldn’t let this month end without bringing you greetings. Happy New Year!!! I truly hope you get all the good desires of your heart this year and beyond.

Amidst all our busyness, we do need some time for relax, right? Right! And as we have mentioned before, there is a time for this, so there is no need to feel guilty about it. Even Jesus, sometimes went away with his disciples, from the crowds he often taught to rest. A lot of evidence of this is found in the Gospels. Here are a few passages you may read to find evidence of this:

Matthew 14:22-23 (bit.ly/Matthew14-22)
Mark 6:30-32 (bit.ly/Mark6-30)
Luke 22:41 (bit.ly/Luke22-41).

We have already established at some point that rest is necessary for all persons, so our focus will be on 10 Wholesome Ways A Christian May Spend Leisure Time:

1.      Develop A Hobby
Find something that you enjoy doing that makes you feel relaxed, at peace and that you find fun. It may be quite simple, but the key is that you enjoy it and it is in line with general Christian principles, as the case should be for any past time that you choose. Some examples are; gardening, collecting postcards, knitting and building small furniture.

2.      Spend Time Appreciating Nature
Past time in the great outdoors. Nature is a part of God’s creation and it is so beautiful. Sometimes I look at it and I am in awe. Personally, I love to wake up in the countryside and breathe the clean air and just take in the surroundings. The beaches in my home country Jamaica are so beautiful and even though I can’t swim (yet) I love being at the beach. Hiking is also becoming a favourite of mine.

3.      Have Group Discussions with Good Friends
Firstly, we should be choosing our friends very carefully. And as a Christian, you want to find friends who are of the same faith as you. Not that you can’t have unsaved friends (I certainly do) but you should be mindful that some influencing will more than likely occur, and you would not want it to be a case where you are being influenced in worldly ways. With that said, a good discussion with friends can be just the thing you need to relax and enjoy an evening perhaps.

4.      Have A Good Meal Out
Food is one of the things that tend to draw people together. And eat we must anyway; so having a nice meal out, perhaps at a fancy or even a laid back restaurant is a good way to spend leisure time. This can be with family or friends. Throw in a nice conversation and that’s a bonus!

5.      Bowl
I haven’t done much bowling myself but whenever I see people bowling, they always seem to be having fun and I have had fun watching them too. So if bowling is in your area, get those socks and shoes and head to the bowling alley! Since this is a team effort, this is a good wholesome way to spend time with others.

6.      Do some Physical Activity
Get physical and move. This is a great way to help to get or keep fit and healthy. There are plenty of sports that you can play, you can choose one or a few depending on what you enjoy. You can also workout by doing different types of exercises including cardio, strength training, high intensity interval training (HIIT), yoga, or Pilates. Yoga and Pilates might be a bit controversial for some denominations but find and do what works for you.

7.      Participate in a Games Night
Games are a great way to spend time with family and friends and even get to know strangers. You can attend a games session or host one. It can be so fun to let loose in a Godly way and play. Sometimes we get competitive, but it is usually still fun. Popular games at a games night in Jamaica include playing dominoes, ludo, draft, chess, checkers, monopoly, snake and ladders, uno, charades and plenty more.

8.      Get a Spa Treatment
Whether we prefer spending time with people or alone, it’s natural that we will want to spend some time with just ourselves. And getting a spa treatment is a great way of doing this. You can do it yourself at home with store bought products or DIY products or you can go to a spa or salon and get it done. In any one you choose, it usually leaves you feeling good, physically and mentally. I hear the term 'self-care' being used a lot in the last few years and I am all for it. Services you can do or get done include; facials, manicures, pedicures, exfoliation, steaming etc. You only get one body, might as well take care of it.

9.      Join a Book Club
Reading is always good, it develops our mental capacity, so read more. It’s not always a chore, it can be relaxing, maybe you just need to find something worthwhile to read. And I don’t mean a magazine. While magazines have their place, find good books to read. A book club is a great way to help you choose what to read and help you stay motivated to follow through. You can find one online or start one yourself. On the other hand, reading is also something you can do solo.

10.   Travel
Travelling is beautiful; you get to explore previously unknown territories. I don’t think I can do travelling enough justice in this little section of this article. However, it’s something I encourage everyone who can to do. It doesn’t have to be expensive; you can save and plan thoroughly for your travels. You can travel within you own country and/or internationally. There is so much to discover.

Friends, I hope you have gotten some insight or are reminded of ways in which you can have some good clean fun. Leave me a comment and let me know.

Shout out to my friends on Facebook for answering my question which contributed to some of these ways shared. I appreciate you!

By the way, this week marks my one year savedversary (one year since I've been saved) lol. Isn't God good? Yes, amen!
